Food Trucks at “Art in the Streets”

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Not so long ago, food trucks were more “roach coach” than gourmet, and street art wasn’t even art – it was vandalism.  But nowadays, food trucks are serving some of the best meals in Los Angeles, and artists like Banksy and Shepard Fairey have helped secure street art’s place in history.

Last Thursday night, street food and street art were brought together for the preview of MOCA’s new show, “Art in the Streets.”  Guests explored the exhibit and chatted with the artists before heading outside to the awaiting food trucks that served up everything from pork belly tacos and Indian fry bread to fattoush salad and ice cream sandwiches.

Check out the slideshow…

…Bonus points if you spot Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale.

Try to make it out to the show!  “Art in the Streets” runs April 17th-August 8th at MOCA’s Geffen Contemporary.  The participating food trucks can be tracked everyday at www.roaminghunger.com/la

The San Diego Food Truck Movement Begins

Monday, March 21st, 2011

This post brought to you by San Diego Food Trucks Facebook page.

When I saw a line to get into the 57 Degrees Wine Bar Food Truck extravaganza, I proclaimed, “Food trucks have ARRIVED in San Diego!”

Hundreds of hungry mobile food fans spent their Friday night on March 18 indulging in 12 trucks: India on Wheels, Sweet Treats, Patty Melt, Chop Soo.ey, Corner Cupcakes, SD Street Eats, Super Q Food truck, MIHO Gastrotruck, Tabe BBQ, Joesonthenose, Devilicious, and Two for the Road.

There was a little confusion and pushback among attendees regarding the $2 entry fee; but I heard it was to help defray the costs of tables, chairs, portable toilets, and clean up.  Each attendee received a voucher for $2 off a wine purchase.

The spacious wine bar was crowded with a lively atmosphere and had plenty of tables and seating, a live band, and even women’s fashions for purchase.  $5 or $10 glasses of wine were available as well as beer.

57 Degrees has stated that they will be holding this event the third Friday of every month going forward.  So if you missed March’s event, there’s another one right around the corner and it is bound to be even bigger and better.

From Road to Restaurant: Komodo Cafe Grand Opening

Sunday, March 20th, 2011

The team at Komodo is always ready to take things to the next level. From their innovative menu, to a second truck expansion, the Komodo crew is continuously pushing the bounds of what’s possible with a few good ideas and a lot of work. At Roaming Hunger, we typically don’t cover eateries that couldn’t roll down a big hill if you left them in neutral. But we are thrilled to see the Komodo team launch their first cafe in Los Angeles this week. See pics for a taste of their tasty new spot. Thanks to Yelp LA, Neoclassics and of course Komodo for the killer party.

Coachella -ella-ella

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

We were happy to see some of our favorite vendors out at Coachella this year.

Green Truck was serving Mother Truckers in VIP.

Coolhaus was stacking people with ice cream sandos also in VIP.

Louks was getting dirty in the camping area near Border Grill Truck.

Kogi stopped by.

Gastropod Miami held down the beer garden and drove cross country.

Can’t wait for next year already….

Eating Real in Oakland… no, really

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

The Eat Real Festival, a mashup of street food and farmers market and people just chowing down was Oakland’s real stab at becoming the low cost foodie haven of the Bay Area.

Altogether, it was jammed. Very jammed. Jammed to the point where you had to wait for food no matter what… having said that, every single wait was WELL worth it… there were plenty of options and the vibe was spot on.

Roaming Hunger entered the scene to make sure the food tasted good… and yes it did.

The shindig last night at the Commonwealth club was a lot of fun and fairly insightful.

The Panel Assembling

The Panel Assembling

Although a few remarks from event goers hoped for more “substance” from the panel, the overall get together was well worth my $20— especially since the Commonwealth Club might become my new hang out spot in SF.

A few food highlights— the Smitten ladies served salted caramel ice cream– definitely worth its salt.

Magic Curry Kart was magical.

Curry Curry

Bacon Potato Chips from Who’s Your Daddy— bacalicious.

AND.. my Empanada from Chile Lindo was $5– but very cheesy and delightful.

All in all a great panel and big ups to Tamara Palmer for being the glue… I had a wonderful time…

QUESTIONS: Will street vendors who sell prepackaged goods leave the streets once they hit grocery?

Does the pursuit of success for a street vendor fundamentally mean leaving the streets?

SF Street Food Festival

yes there were many hungry people

there were many hungry people

Yes it was packed but yes it was delicious.

The streets were packed with hunger. Roving masses of people trying to figure out what booth was worth the tremendous wait. And which ones had the shortest lines. And which ones had the most satisfying customers mid-bite, recently departed from the line munching happily on their meals..

Oh the jealousy.

But seriously… this was an ordeal. A party if you may in celebration of food. It was street food because it was in the streets. oh yeah, there were some killer street vendors on hand flippin up tasty treats.
