Me So Hungry’s PB&J Burger

If you ask anyone who has tried LA’s Me So Hungry truck, the general consensus seems to be, “cool name, cool dudes, cool food.”  While all these qualities certainly apply, there is a reason they are one of our favorite burger trucks, and our (gasp in anticipation…) NATIONAL BURGER MONTH FEATURED TRUCK! (phew, phew, pop, shimmer… like those fireworks?)

Now before you start yelling at your computer, or rather me, remember a burger is a work of art. Thus, it is a subjective matter.  There are plenty of other creative, perfectly infused, juicy patties across Los Angeles, let alone the rest of the country, but Me So Hungry just does it so… right.  They’ve wined and dined us (ok, we brought the wine), made our sliders fresh-to-order, and delighted our taste buds with peanut butter & jelly and bacon… and that’s together, mind you.  Me So Hungry is the brain child of a couple of “Westside foodies,” – needless to say, we have a lot of similar interests and one big, fat crush.

LA truck operator and manager, Jeff Logan, and head cook, Matthew Hirschman, were kind enough to let us have a few words with them recently.  Once a duo on the Nom Nom truck, they’ve successfully carried over their culinary skills and friendly, laid-back demeanor.

But let’s get down to business.

Arguably, the secret to Me So Hungry’s distinctive burger is the bun.  They use brioche buns that are freshly-baked every morning.  Once they reach the customer, they have a thin, golden, crispy outer layer encasing the soft dough. Their shell-like quality provides a much-needed layer of texture.   Furthermore, the most popular menu items on the truck are the sliders: Cali (angus beef, bacon, balsamic sautéed onions, and gorgonzola cheese sauce), KTM (short ribs, pepper jack cheese, crispy onions, & a spicy cream sauce), and Flyin’ Hawaiian (chicken, crispy Maui onions, & chipotle aioli).  Insider tip – ask if you can get the Duke, or any of the other larger burgers as sliders! All of the sliders carry their own distinctive, rich flavor combinations; one would be hard-pressed not to be satisfied with at least one of them.

Still, Me So Hungry stands out largely because of the perfection of their PB&J burger (peanut butter, jelly, Sriracha, and cheddar on a burger.)  Don’t knock it until you try it!  This is one marriage of flavors that’s going to last.  The peanut butter is runny. The jelly gushes out in every bite.  The bacon is tender, yet crispy. And then the Sriracha gut-punches you.  To quote Mr. Burgundy, “it’s so good, once it hits your lips, it’s so good.”  This isn’t any kind of PB&J your mom used to make.  But you don’t have to take my word for it – find the truck and try it for yourself!

That’s all folks!  National burger month has been a blast and a half, but its time to move on.
