Cupcake Dreams Come True

Bay Area natives may be quite familiar with the delicacies being offered by CupKate’s Mobile Cupcakery. They have been around since 2009, and were one of the first mobile cupcake trucks in the Bay Area. Since opening, they have been voted “Best Food Truck” by both the East Bay Express and SF Weekly.

Kate McEachern, owner and founder of CupKate’s, has a huge passion for baking, and while studying at Cal she would often bake for friends, roommates, and professors. As a student she had a brief stint, as an intern, at the fast-paced and well-admired Chez Panisse.

Kate had dreams of opening a brick-and-mortar in Berkley, but after hitting a few roadblocks, the idea died and Kate went on to work for several years as the Managing Editor of Dwell Magazine. Not wanting Kate to give up her dream, her husband and a fellow colleague inspired the idea of starting off in the food truck/street vendor scene. Initially, Kate was apprehensive, however her passion and determination took over, and Cupkate’s was born.

6 years and 2 trucks later, Kate opened her very first brick-and-mortar, Stateside Bakery, in October of last year. Although her trucks only serve gourmet cupcakes, Stateside’s menu has expanded further. Inspired by her nephew and the memories of indulging her favorite pastime sweets, Twinkies and Oreos, Kate’s mission is to re-create a healthier version of these nostalgic goodies by using only the finest local and natural ingredients. Her version of a Twinkie, the “Vanilla Bean Twinkle” is now one of their flagship items, made with Madagascar vanilla beans and local Clover Farms dairy. Other items you may recognize and want to try are Kate’s version of Pop Tarts, Moon Pies, and Peanut Nutter Butter Cookies.
