What is the story behind your business' name?
What is the Story Behind Our Business Name? The name Adulis Coffee is inspired by Adulis, an ancient port city on the Red Sea that was once one of the most important trading centers in the ancient world. Located near present-day Eritrea and under the control of the Ethiopian Aksumite Kingdom, Adulis served as a gateway between Africa and the global economy more than 2,000 years ago. During antiquity, merchants from Rome, India, Arabia, and the Mediterranean world traveled through Adulis to trade goods such as gold, ivory, spices, textiles, and glassware. The port connected African highland civilizations with international markets and helped make the Ethiopian Kingdom of Aksum one of the great trading powers of the ancient world. Adulis was more than just a port—it was a place where cultures met, ideas were exchanged, and global trade flourished. It symbolized connection, exchange, culture, and commerce across continents long before modern globalization. As founders of Ethiopian origin, we chose the name Adulis to honor this rich history and ancient civilization. Just as the port of Adulis connected the world through trade, Adulis Coffee aims to connect people through coffee—bringing Ethiopian coffee culture, quality, and hospitality to communities everywhere. Our name represents: Ethiopian heritage Trade and connection Cultural exchange Quality products from origin to customer A legacy of commerce and hospitality Adulis Coffee is not just a name — it is a story of history, culture, and connection.

Why did you decide to start your business?
Why Did We Decide to Start This Business? We started Adulis Coffee because of our deep love for coffee and our passion for sharing Ethiopian coffee heritage with the world. Coffee is not just a drink in Ethiopia — it is a culture, a ceremony, and a way of bringing people together. Ethiopia is known as the birthplace of coffee, and for centuries coffee has been an important part of Ethiopian hospitality, community, and daily life. The traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony is a symbol of friendship, respect, and connection. As people of Ethiopian origin, we grew up understanding that coffee is about more than caffeine — it is about conversation, community, and culture. We wanted to bring that experience to others and share authentic Ethiopian coffee with new communities. Starting this business allowed us to: Share Ethiopian coffee culture and traditions Introduce high-quality Ethiopian coffee to more people Create experiences that bring people together Celebrate our heritage and history Build something meaningful that connects culture and community Adulis Coffee is not just a business for us — it is a way to share our culture, our history, and our love for coffee with the world.
Who encouraged you the most to start your own business?
Who Encouraged You the Most to Start Your Own Business? We were primarily self-motivated to start our business. Our motivation came from our passion for coffee, our Ethiopian heritage, and our desire to build something meaningful of our own. We saw an opportunity to share authentic Ethiopian coffee and culture with a wider community, and that vision pushed us to take the step into entrepreneurship. Starting a business is not easy, but our passion, discipline, and long-term vision encouraged us to keep moving forward. We were inspired by: Our love for coffee Ethiopian coffee culture and history The desire to build something of our own The opportunity to share our heritage with others The goal of creating a business that brings people together More than anyone else, our biggest encouragement came from within — from our belief in our idea and our willingness to work hard to make it happen. What's your favorite event that you've catered for?
What’s the Favorite Event You’ve Catered For? One of our favorite events to cater was the College Park Farmers Market. What made this event special was the diversity of people who came together in one place. People from different walks of life — families, students, professionals, and visitors — all came to enjoy the market, support local businesses, and connect with the community. The farmers market atmosphere is very welcoming and lively. People are relaxed, curious, and open to trying new things, which makes it the perfect place to introduce people to Ethiopian coffee and our coffee culture. We enjoyed talking with customers, sharing the story behind our coffee, and watching people experience Ethiopian coffee for the first time. Events like the College Park Farmers Market are meaningful to us because they are not just about selling coffee — they are about community, culture, and connection. Being able to serve coffee while meeting people from many different backgrounds reminds us why we started Adulis Coffee in the first place. The College Park Farmers Market represents everything we love — coffee, community, culture, and connection.
