Meet Jermaine Frazer-Phillips
What is the story behind your business' name?

I grew up in a very Jamaican household. Every morning my Mother used to order a medium French vanilla coffee from Dunkin Donuts. Coffee fueled my Mom to work a daytime job and then oftentimes, she transitioned to cleaning a beauty salon to pay the bills and to keep us happy. But this is only a fraction of the story. My family migrated from Jamaica and have worked tooth and nail to succeed here in the US. And for that, I owe them all I’ve got to succeed. Big Up Brew is my appreciation project for my family, specifically my Mom. I expo’d in a restaurant to understand order flows, was mentored by a private chef during a catering event to broaden my culinary understanding, used all of my corporate paychecks to buy equipment and services, spent countless hours of obtaining knowledge from the cafe industry and more. Big Up Brew is a result of the risks that my Jamaican family took, my learning of discipline from playing football at the collegiate level, walking many miles a day during the summer at that door-to-door sales job I had in Queens, NY, working for NYC start-ups, insurance, failures, and successes.

Big Up Brew in East Hartford, CT is all about great coffee, lots of compassion, and impacting the community. While “big up” is inspired by the owner's mother and the famous Jamaican expression meaning “congratulate and honor yourself,” they are known for their big, flavorful, extra-caffeinated beverages.

Serve up some sweet maple cinnamon lattes, oat milk cappuccinos, whole milk mocha lattes, and a whole lot more to guests at any kind of gathering. Have a big breakfast meeting to plan? Or how about a retreat, post-wedding brunch, or food festival? Then Big Up Brew is the coffee spot for you! The owner, Jermaine Frazer-Phillips, was given the courage to become a caffeine connoisseur by his reggae artist uncle Mikey, and he's never goin' back to a time without espresso tinged with a Jamaican taste.

Grab an Espresso Ting with freshly brewed espresso and the iced grapefruit Jamaican soda, Ting. Flavor your drinks with vanilla, caramel, or chocolate syrup, but don't get up just yet. Start your day off with some hearty bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches so your guests get all the brainpower they need to make it through your meeting or event.
