What is your favorite dish on the menu?

My favorite granola mash up is to add my chai spiced granola (Chai Time) to vanilla bean ice cream! I love the combination of textures and the balance of the sweet ice cream with the crunchiness and spiciness of the granola adding a pop of flavor.

What is the story behind your business' name?

I moved to Brooklyn from Manhattan nearly 20 years ago and it wasn't long before I felt right at home. The fusion of all the different cultures combined with the neighborhood feel of the streets was so comforting and a welcome break from the high energy buzz of the city! So when it came time to come up with a name for my business, I looked for inspiration in my very own neighborhood

Where did you learn to cook?

My parents are from the West Indies and if you know anything about Caribbean people - we love to cook! As a kid growing up, there was always something bubbling on the stove or needing to be chopped, sliced and diced. We were expected to help out whenever there was a meal being cooked and to this day, holidays and family meals are a big production when I get together with my family. I feel very lucky to have grown up in very multi-cultural environments where I literally felt like I tasted the world, starting at a young age and continuing to this day in the way that I think about aromas and flavors

Why did you decide to start your business?

I started Flatbush Granola on a dare from my best friend, who challenged me to take my hobby to a business in 60 days. I did her one better and thirty days later, I was at my first popup! A pandemic later and we are still here, serving up granola goodness that celebrates the beautiful diversity of my borough with big bold flavors - like Indian chai, pumpkin spice, and classic cranberry

Who encouraged you the most to start your own business?

From since I was young, I knew that I would have my own business. Flatbush Granola is not my first entrepreneurial venture, so I'm used to motivating myself! That being said, my family and friends are incredibly supportive but interestingly it was my clients and colleagues (all of whom were the early recipients of my granola as holiday gifts) who were pushing me for years before I finally decided to take the plunge.

My favorite event was doing a swag bag for the Billboard Women in Music Awards. It was such an honor to be asked to help celebrate a wonderful group of women who have been doing so much for their craft
