You won’t find Angel Jimenez—La Piraña, as he’s known—hacking up roast pork on the streets of the Bronx with a machete on a weekday. His lechon trailer only shows up on Saturdays and Sundays, and in order to achieve the extreme tenderness and explosive flavor that’s made his meat so popular, Jimenez is prepping the pig as early as 3AM. His trailer, which blasts music and draws crowds substantial enough to consistently sell out of pork, is a true staple of Mott Haven.
Jimenez is exploring his Puerto Rican roots through his menu, serving a number of specialties alongside his pork, like guineo, blood sausage, shrimp and octopus salads, empanadas, and of course, rice with pigeon peas. Remember when we mentioned the only time you could nab his lechon was on weekends? Well, we sort of lied. You could, of course, book him to cater your next event. That would be wise.
