What is the story behind your business' name?

sasa adopts its name from a native African language, Swahili, and means ‘now’. At sasa our mantra is to be in the now, from that first sip of coffee to the moments that make up each day. our love for the craft behind coffee means that we work with farmers that produce the finest beans grown at high altitudes in East Africa. sasa is more than a name, it’s a way of being.

Where did you learn to cook?

I picked up the craft by working alongside roasters, dialing in espresso, experimenting with brew methods, and spending a lot of time behind the machine. It’s less pots and pans and more grinders, scales, and steam wands.

Why did you decide to start your business?

I started my coffee company because I wanted to bridge the gap between where the beans come from and how people experience them here. Growing up around East African coffee, I saw firsthand the care farmers put into their work, but I also noticed how little of that story and quality made it to the cup in most places. Starting this business felt like a way to honor that craft, roast in small batches for freshness, and create experiences where people connect not just with great coffee, but with the culture and community behind it.

Who encouraged you the most to start your own business?

The biggest encouragement came from the people closest to me — family and friends who saw how much passion I had for coffee and for building something of my own. They kept reminding me that if I didn’t take the leap, I’d always wonder “what if.” That push, plus the inspiration I’ve drawn from the farmers I work with back home, really gave me the confidence to turn the idea into a business.

What's your favorite event that you've catered for?

One of my favorite events to cater has been the Alo Moves run clubs — I’ve done them a few times now. The energy is always amazing, people come in fresh from their run and really appreciate a good coffee. It’s a fun mix of wellness and community, which is exactly the vibe I love bringing Sasa Coffee into.
