Taqueria Nixtamal is a celebrated Mexican restaurant and catering pop-up rooted in Corona, Queens, known for bringing authentic, fresh-made tortillas and traditional flavors to the heart of New York City. Founded in 2008 by husband-and-wife team Fernando and Ros Ruiz, the business began with a simple mission: to offer New Yorkers the kind of tortillas found daily in Mexican tortillerías. As the first in Queens to operate an artisanal tortilla machine, Nixtamal quickly became a staple for chefs and restaurants seeking quality, hand-crafted corn tortillas. What started as a tortilla shop soon grew into a full taqueria serving dishes rooted in tradition—from tacos and birria to mole and shrimp cocktails. The restaurant’s popularity led to major recognition, including being selected as the official taqueria of the US Open in 2022 and drawing thousands of hungry visitors at the Queens Night Market in 2023. Now operating as a catering pop-up as well, Taqueria Nixtamal brings its signature recipes and energy to events across the city.
