It all started with a chef’s undying affection for the classic Italian delicacy that is porchetta. This sandwich, ubiquitous in markets throughout Tuscany, was sorely lacking in Des Moines, IL before The Traveling Pig swept in to rectify that error. While porchetta was how it all began, this food truck now sports a menu touting pork sandwiches from across the globe.
Porchetta, if you’re unfamiliar, is slow-roasted pork seasoned with an aromatic blend of garlic, rosemary, fennel, and olive oil. Here, it’s served up smothered with salsa between two thick slices of bakery fresh focaccia bread. In addition to this veritable classic dish from the Boot, you can sample other regional and international cuisine. You can sink your teeth into the Carolinas with a porchetta slathered in bittersweet chipotle BBQ glaze. Or, you can nab an old-fashioned Cubano for that signature robust mix of pickles, mayo, and mustard. There are even some vegetarian options, so the non-carnivorous need not go hungry when passing by this truck. Really, not a single sandwich will disappoint here, so head on out to The Traveling Pig the next time you’re feelin’ ravenous. If you fall in love with the eats, book ‘em for your own event.
