What is the story behind your business' name?

For as long as I can remember, our niece would spend summers with us in Ohio. It was during that time that she noticed that almost everything I cooked included bacon and as a result she started referring to me as "Uncle Bacon". I've got 8 nieces and 1 nephew (and counting) and they all refer to me as such (or will once they can start talking). When we decided to create this business, we could think of no better name than Uncle Bacon's BBQ.

Why did you decide to start your business?

There were a variety of factors that led to us starting this business...I've worked in the corporate world as a Data Engineer for 12 years and as I've gotten older I've begun feeling like there's more to life than sitting at a computer. My entire department was let go back in 2015 after the company was acquired and that was a huge eye opener for me. I landed on my feet pretty quickly but again in 2018 the company I was working for was going through an acquisition. I wasn't let go this time around, but something clicked in my head and I had this feeling that I wasn't in control of my own life and I wanted to change that. In the fall of that year I was tailgating at a Cleveland Brown's like I always do and I was making Pig Shots (among other things). I took the lid off the smoker to check them and a group of guys approached me asking what it was that I was making. I explained to them what it was, and they insisted on trying them. I really hadn't brought enough to share but when they offered me money for some I couldn't say no. That was definitely my aha moment. That spring is when things really got going!

What's your favorite event that you've catered for?

We catered an event for the Akron Bikers for Boobs in 2021. Bikers for Boobs is an annual poker run held in Akron, Ohio that benefits Stewart's Caring Place in Fairlawn, Ohio. All proceeds stay here the community. There were close to 2000 people in attendance and everything ran super smooth. The week leading up to it was pure chaos but we were able to get it done. The event was on a Sunday and we had outdoor events on both Friday & Saturday which contributed to the craziness.
