Meet John Mumbower

What is your favorite dish on the menu?

It’s hard to pick just one because our menu changes with the seasons! During lemonade season, it would have to be our ChiTown Strawberry Bliss, our signature fresh-squeezed strawberry lemonade and one of our biggest customer favorites. When the weather cools down, I love our Holly Jolly Hot Chocolate, a gourmet hot chocolate topped with whipped cream, chocolate drizzle and holiday sprinkles.

What is the story behind your business' name?

ChiTown Beverages represents both where we’re from and what we wanted the business to become. We started with ChiTown Citrus, taking the classic fresh-squeezed lemonade stand and turning it into a unique beverage experience. But we quickly realized we didn’t want the experience to end when summer did. That’s how our gourmet hot chocolate and handcrafted coffee offerings developed. ChiTown Beverages became the year-round brand that brings all of those experiences together.

Where did you learn to cook?

We’re a little different because our craft is beverages rather than traditional cooking. A lot of what we do came from experimenting, testing recipes and constantly improving them. Whether it’s finding the right combination for a fresh-squeezed flavored lemonade, creating a gourmet hot chocolate with specialty toppings, or developing our handcrafted coffee drinks, we’ve spent a lot of time turning familiar beverages into something more memorable.

Why did you decide to start your business?

I wanted to build something of my own that combined creativity, customer interaction and my love of events. The original idea was simple: what if we took the traditional lemonade stand and completely elevated it? That became ChiTown Citrus and our fresh-squeezed lemonade experience. From there, I wanted to make the business year-round, which led us into gourmet hot chocolate and handcrafted coffee. Today, the goal is bigger than selling drinks—we want to create an experience guests remember.

Who encouraged you the most to start your own business?

My family has been a huge part of encouraging and supporting me as I’ve built ChiTown Beverages. They’ve been there as the business has grown from an idea centered around fresh-squeezed lemonade into a year-round concept that now includes gourmet hot chocolate and handcrafted coffee. Running a small business takes a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes, and having my family involved and supporting the vision has made a huge difference.

What's your favorite event that you've catered for?

It’s hard to pick just one! Some of my favorite experiences have been our events at Naper Settlement and Hideaway Brew Garden. Both have given us the opportunity to interact with so many different guests and be part of some really fun community events. At Naper Settlement, we’ve been able to serve everything from our fresh-squeezed lemonade during the warmer months to our gourmet hot chocolate and handcrafted coffee during the cooler and holiday events. At Hideaway, we’ve had a great time bringing our fresh-squeezed lemonade experience to their outdoor events and seeing guests come back to try different flavors. What makes both venues special is the atmosphere and the interaction with the guests. Seeing someone take that first sip, smile, and tell us how much they love it is still one of my favorite parts of doing this.
