About Hijo De Su Madre

What’s in a name? Hijo De Su Madre means “son of a mother,” a nod to the fact the foods whipped up here are made from recipes shared across generations. However, Chef Gregory Owens is making one small tweak to his mother’s recipes. Everything here is 100% free of animal products. After seeing his family benefit from a plant-based diet, he decided to add some vegan flare to the Los Angeles taco scene.

Owens and his team use mostly organic ingredients and use compostable utensils. So, the ethics are as good as the food here. Speaking of the food, the menu doesn’t sport the average offerings of tofu and seitan. Instead, Owens mostly harnesses the natural flavor of fruits and veggies in his dishes. Whether he’s enhancing the hearty flavor of avocado with a savory beer batter or deep-frying black beans to give ‘em a little something extra, every item here is so rich in flavor even avid carnivores won’t miss meat.
