What is the story behind your business' name?

"The Balkan European” is a name that celebrates both the rich, diverse heritage of the Balkan Peninsula and its place within the broader European cultural landscape. The Balkans are known for their incredible mix of traditions, languages, and cuisines—blending Mediterranean, Eastern European, Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian influences. By calling it ‘The Balkan European,’ we’re acknowledging that while the Balkans have their own distinct identity, they’re an essential part of Europe’s history and culture. It’s about honoring those deep roots while inviting everyone to experience the flavors and stories that make the region so special.

Where did you learn to cook?

Sorin learned to cook in kitchens during his time in America, and he is using this time to experience and connect with his Romanian roots, sharing family recipes is important to him. Alexandra learned to cook growing up in her childhood family home, and her time in different kitchens for work, it is her biggest passion.

Why did you decide to start your business?

We both wanted to spend more time together and saw a creative and unique outlet for doing so. We both love to cook and have new experiences as well as meet new people and bring Sorin's culture to America.

Who encouraged you the most to start your own business?

We both encouraged and believed in each other, but it was a self started and encouraged mostly.
