Austin, the spunky capital of Texas, continually attracts an influx of incomers with its many amazing attributes; the live music scene, the fun and youthful energy that University of Texas students bring, the beautiful landscapes, and of course the fact that it's been successfully kept weird over the years. However, you can't sufficiently enjoy any of this without being properly satiated, so it's only appropriate that the food culture here is absolutely thriving. For this, we really have the Austin food trailers and food trucks to thank.
Throughout town, you'll find designated locations with eye-catching assortments of food trucks and food trailers parked and serving their mouthwatering offerings. These spots are complete with ample seating areas, a fun and laid-back ambience, and often you can catch some jamming live music too.
South Congress Avenue (locally nicknamed) is the stretch of road that takes you to and from downtown and South Austin. This scenic strip is famous for its eclectic mix of funky shops, music venues, and for being the birthplace of the Austin street food scene.
Back in 2007, an airstream trailer labeled "Hey Cupcake!" majestically appeared in a grassy lot on South Congress. With its sleek appearance and sweet fragrance of fresh-baked gourmet cupcakes, it drew in hundreds of hungry passers-by. As Hey Cupcake! proved to be an instant hit, one by one, new trailers rolled in with delicious, inexpensive and creative selections....thus, an exciting new food trend began. Today, you can still get your Hey Cupcake! fix on SoCo. But before you grab dessert, you gotta stop a few feet away at Burro Cheese Kitchen and order up a yummy gourmet grilled cheese sandwich.
Not too far from where the horns are hooking 'em (on Barton Springs Road, near the UT campus), several local chefs are cooking up some wonderfully flavorful food. Here you'll find The Mighty Cone, another Austin street food staple that first introduced its famous Hot 'n Crunchy Fried Chicken cone (topped with mango-jalapeno slaw and ancho sauce) to the locals at the Austin City Limits music festival, years ago.
Hey...You Gonna Eat or What? is another crowd favorite with its hilariously surly service and its offering of the oh-so-craveable Shiner Bock Beer-Battered Monte Cristo, and more.
Rolling into the historic downtown district to feed and fuel the busy workers by day and the lively club crowds by night are popular trucks such as Kebabilicious (home to authentic Turkish-style wraps) and Grindhouse (home to exhileratingly tasty gourmet burgers). Employers who wish to provide their office with a morale-boosting perk can always book a food truck to stop by and serve lunch.
Tex Mex is top choice in The Capitol City, and when it comes to tacos...well, Austin takes these quite seriously. In fact, Austin's most iconic creation is the beautiful breakfast taco; warm tortillas topped with delicious breakfast fillings, such as eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, and a generous drizzle of queso. These make for the best on-the-go meal for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and anytime in between. A few of the most scrumptious tacos (of all kinds) that you'll find in town are served right on the streets (of course).
Rosarito is locally acclaimed for their fresh and authentic selection of seafood tacos.
Torchy's Tacos is one of the hugest food truck success stories in town with its affordable yet unforgettable gourmet tacos.
Chia Lantro BBQ is famous for its incredibly tasty tacos with a Korean BBQ twist.
The Vegan Nom will satisfy all your taco cravings with a completely meat-free selection.
Check out the live food truck map above so that you can get matched with your next delicious meal. No matter where you reside in Travis County; Pflugerville, Round Rock, West Lake, etc, you're sure to find something dang tasty near you.
